Charter
– Coalition for the Global Commons

Based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
and the Universal Declaration of Human Responsibilities
as well as the Earth Charter 1992,
with specific reference to point four of its preamble “Universal Responsibility”

We choose “to live with a sense of universal responsibility, identifying ourselves with the whole Earth community as well as our local communities. We are at once citizens of different nations and of one world in which the local and global are linked." We believe that all humankind benefits when we “live with reverence for the mystery of being, gratitude for the gift of life, and humility regarding the human place in nature” . We will live in this way to the best of our ability and support others who wish to do the same.

The underlying goal of the Coalition is to inculcate not only an awareness of the global commons, but to highlight its implications for individuals. What belongs to no-one, belongs to everyone.

Vision:
We will increase collective awareness of and promote individual consciousness on the global commons and global common goods, based on the sovereign legitimacy and authority of the world's people as global citizens, and ultimately leading to their global representation in decision-making and governance. As humanity unites toward a common global goal, we anticipate the appearance and articulation of new and enlightened strategies capable of carrying us forward together, while honouring local and individual initiatives and expression.

Mission / Purpose:
Our collaborative process has the working title "Coalition for the Global Commons". Its purpose is to contribute to a peaceful and sustainable world by sharing knowledge and combining our individual intelligence towards a global consciousness. We embark on building an empowering understanding and appreciation of “global commons” among the world’s citizens and decision makers. With a focus on the global commons, the Coalition will identify state-of-the-art methods and technologies that empower civil society to forge innovative and stronger forms of cooperation, and that promote understanding of people's rights and responsibilities as sovereign world citizens of the global commons. Experts, leaders, and the broad public from all geographic, social and economic sectors will thus be supported to combine their competencies, consult and debate the world's key interdependency issues, and develop effective steps towards just and effective solutions to the world’s urgent transnational problems. The goal of these cooperative efforts is the development of ‘win-win’ solutions in a self-governing process.
